During the title-deciding match of the ACC Men's Emerging Asia Cup in Colombo on Sunday, the Indian commentators were engaged in a discussion about the concept of a 'best of three final.' As the match unfolded, Pakistan A displayed a dominant performance and defeated India A by a significant margin of 128 runs, successfully defending their ACC Men's Emerging Asia Cup title.
In the midst of the intense final, with India facing a tough loss, the Indian commentators mused about the idea of introducing a 'best of three final' format. The suggestion was that if such a format were implemented, teams would have a chance to stage a comeback even if they face adversity in the first match.
"Every time, there should be a best of three final. So that teams have a chance to make a comeback," voiced one of the commentators, putting forth his perspective on the matter.
The fellow commentator seemed open to the idea and responded, "There is no harm in having best of three final."
This was not the first instance where such a discussion emerged in Indian cricket circles. Earlier, Indian captain Rohit Sharma had also advocated for a best-of-three finals format for the World Test Championship after experiencing back-to-back defeats.
India had suffered a comprehensive 209-run loss to Australia at The Oval, further adding to their disappointing run in ICC events since 2013. In the inaugural WTC final held in England two years ago, they had ended up as runners-up to New Zealand, leading the then-head coach Ravi Shastri and captain Virat Kohli to highlight the need for a best-of-three finals format after their encounter with New Zealand at Southampton.
