South Africa opener Dean Elgar will undergo x-rays after being hit on the hand by a delivery from Pakistan pacer Shaheen Afridi, according to a statement by Cricket South Africa.
In the 14th over of South Africa’s second innings, a ball from Shaheen, which generated extra bounce, struck Elgar on his left hand’s little finger.
“Dean Elgar has gone for x-rays on his hand. The bubble is not broken or compromised as the medical team is following the pre-arranged and agreed protocols,” CSA said in a statement.
Despite the blow, he continued to bat but was eventually dismissed by leg-spinner Yasir Shah, courtesy a brilliant catch by Mohammad Rizwan behind the stumps, after scoring 29 runs off 45 balls.
Pakistan were bowled out for 378 on the third day of the opening Test in Karachi on Thursday, in reply to South Africa's first innings total of 220.
Resuming at 308-8, Pakistan added a further 70 runs for the loss of two wickets, stretching their lead to 158.
South African fast bowler Kagiso Rabada finished with 3-70, completing his 200 wickets in 44 Tests by dismissing Hasan Ali for 21.
