Pat Cummins achieved a hat-trick as Australia secured a 28-run victory over Bangladesh via the Duckworth-Lewis-Stern (DLS) method, kicking off their Super 8s campaign with a win and maintaining an unblemished record at the T20 World Cup 2024.

Australia's bowlers limited Bangladesh to 140-8, with David Warner and Travis Head providing a strong start in the chase. Despite Rishad's two quick wickets post-rain break slowing down Australia's progress, Warner, who was dropped on five, soon regained momentum. He reached his half-century with a six and remained unbeaten on 53 from 35 balls, taking Australia to 100-2 before rain concluded the match in Antigua.

Cummins' hat-trick made him the second Australian to achieve this feat in a T20 World Cup, following Brett Lee's 2007 hat-trick against the same opponents. Cummins dismissed Mahmudullah and Mahedi Hasan at the end of the 18th over, and then Towhid Hridoy on the first ball of the 20th over.

Bangladesh's captain Najmul Hossain Shanto top-scored with 41 before being dismissed by Adam Zampa, who had impressive figures of 2-24. Hridoy contributed 40 from 28 balls, helping Bangladesh to a modest total. Australia’s openers quickly took charge, putting up a 65-run partnership. Although Rishad Hossain's two wickets after the rain gave Bangladesh a glimmer of hope, Warner's steady performance ensured Australia was in control before another rain delay ended the match.

Mitchell Starc set the tone by dismissing Tanzid Hasan with the third ball of the match, and the experienced Australian attack dominated the fragile Bangladesh batting lineup. Despite a 58-run stand between Shanto and Litton Das, Australia remained confident. Zampa's breakthrough ended their partnership, and consistent wickets fell thereafter.

Cummins sealed the deal with his hat-trick: Mahmudullah dragged a short ball onto his stumps, Mahedi Hasan edged to deep third, and Hridoy scooped to Josh Hazlewood at short fine leg, completing the seventh hat-trick in men’s T20 World Cup history.
