The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has appointed Devajit Saikia as the acting secretary of the board, following the recent departure of Jay Shah, who took over as the chairman of the International Cricket Council (ICC) from December 1.

Saikia, a former first-class cricketer from Assam, is currently serving as the BCCI’s joint secretary. He will step into the role of acting secretary in a temporary capacity until a permanent appointment is made, as per the BCCI's rules and regulations.

The announcement was made by BCCI President Roger Binny, who exercised his constitutional powers to appoint Saikia for the role. In a letter to Saikia, which PTI has obtained, Binny referred to clause 7(1)(d) of the BCCI constitution, which allows the president to delegate the functions of the secretary in the event of a vacancy or indisposition.

"I delegate the functions of secretary to you till the post is filled up by processes laid down as per BCCI rules and regulations," Binny wrote to Saikia. "I am confident you will perform the duties to the best of your abilities and with aplomb."

Saikia will hold this position until September next year, after which a permanent secretary will be appointed. He is also serving as the Advocate General of Assam.
