The series kicks off on November 28 at Hagley Oval in Christchurch
New Zealand has officially announced their squad for the upcoming three-match Test series against England, with star batter Kane Williamson making his much-anticipated return to international cricket. The series kicks off on November 28 at Hagley Oval in Christchurch, marking a significant milestone for Williamson, who has been sidelined since September due to a groin injury sustained during a match against Sri Lanka.
The injury had forced Williamson to miss New Zealand's recent tour to India, where the Black Caps put on a dominant display, sweeping India 3-0. His return is a major boost for New Zealand as they aim to continue their strong run in the ICC World Test Championship.
The squad will be led by Tom Latham, who continues as captain, while veteran pacer Tim Southee, who recently announced that he will retire from Test cricket after this World Test Championship cycle, will also feature. This series could potentially mark the end of Southee’s illustrious Test career, with the third Test in Hamilton likely to be his final appearance.
The selectors have opted for a balanced squad, combining experienced players with emerging talent. However, there are a few notable exclusions. Fast bowlers Ben Sears and Kyle Jamieson remain unavailable due to injuries, while Mark Chapman, who was part of the squad for the India tour, makes way for Williamson's return. Spinners Ajaz Patel and Ish Sodhi, who impressed against India, have been left out, but Mitchell Santner is expected to join the squad for the second and third Tests, pending his recovery from a side strain.
Emerging all-rounder Nathan Smith has earned a call-up after strong domestic performances, adding depth to the bowling attack.
New Zealand selector Sam Wells expressed excitement for the series, emphasizing the significance of the match-ups in the World Test Championship and the emotional farewell to Tim Southee.
"This series is significant for us not only in terms of the World Test Championship but also as we bid farewell to one of our finest, Tim Southee. His contributions to New Zealand cricket are invaluable, and I believe both the team and the fans will be eager to honor him in this high-profile series against a respected English side," said Wells.
