He also acknowledged Babar's skills but advised him to change his mindset and approach
Former Pakistan cricket team captain Moin Khan has emphasized the need for "new blood" in the national team, stating that the team’s recent failures must be analyzed. Khan pointed out that the lack of merit and effort were key factors behind Pakistan's defeat in the Champions Trophy, and he urged the Prime Minister to take notice of the situation.
Speaking to the media in Karachi, Moin Khan stressed that without hard work, victory is not possible.
"The team that works hard is the one that wins," he said.
He highlighted several reasons behind Pakistan’s loss in the Champions Trophy, including the improper selection process, where players who were given opportunities did not live up to expectations.
Khan also recalled that when Pakistan lost the T20 World Cup, the Chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) and others suggested a "surgery" for the team, but nothing substantial happened.
"At that time, surgery didn’t happen either. We need to make difficult decisions now," Khan said, adding that merit was lacking in the selection process.
He criticized the influence of personal connections in cricket and pointed out that non-technical people are occupying positions in the PCB that should be held by former cricketers.
"When there is no hard work or serious effort, problems arise," he explained.
Khan urged the need for tough decisions to strengthen the national team, stating that selections should be made on merit. He expressed frustration over how decisions are often made prematurely in Pakistan cricket.
"Decisions are made first, and then the job advertisements come out. The PCB chairman is nominated, and the governing board elects the nominated chairman," Khan explained.
He emphasized that the PCB should be run by individuals with actual cricketing experience, not those with personal interests or connections.
Khan also called on the Prime Minister to focus on reforming cricket in the country.
"In the PSL, players are selected for the national team based on their performance, but that is not the case in other leagues like the BPL, It is time to give new talent a chance," he added.
Regarding Babar Azam, Khan acknowledged his skills but advised him to change his mindset and approach.
"Babar Azam is a good player, but he needs to transform himself. He should evolve like Virat Kohli has," Khan said, urging the batsman to adopt a more professional attitude.
Khan also emphasized that the senior players in the team should make way for the younger generation.
"The team now needs new blood," he added, and once again called on the Chairman of the PCB to take responsibility and address the issues within the board.
"Some individuals, who are paid hefty salaries by the PCB, are the ones speaking against it," he concluded.
