Former Indian batter Vinod Kambli has been admitted to a hospital in Thane, Maharashtra, after his health deteriorated on Saturday. The 52-year-old is under intensive care as doctors closely monitor his condition.
Kambli, who has been battling health problems for over a decade, showed signs of improvement on Monday, according to Indian media reports. However, doctors have decided to keep him in the intensive care unit for further observation.
Kambli made his ODI debut against Pakistan on October 18, 1991, and represented India in 17 Test matches and 104 ODIs. His final international appearance was in 2000 against Sri Lanka.
The former cricketer’s post-retirement life has been marked by persistent health challenges, which have also led to financial difficulties. A recent viral video showed Kambli holding Sachin Tendulkar’s arm during a memorial event for their childhood coach, Ramakant Achrekar.
In an earlier interview, Kambli expressed his willingness to join a rehabilitation center, emphasizing that he had quit smoking and drinking six months ago for the sake of his children. “I’m not afraid to go to rehab. My family is with me, and I’ve made these changes for my kids,” he shared.
Kambli revealed he has suffered two heart attacks in the past, and Tendulkar covered the expenses for two of his surgeries in 2013. While reflecting on their relationship, Kambli admitted feeling disappointed at one point due to a lack of help but acknowledged Tendulkar’s long-standing support. “Sachin has done so much for me since childhood,” he said.
He credited his wife and children for ensuring he receives the care he needs and mentioned the support from his former teammates. “Sunil Gavaskar was the first to speak up for me, and Ajay Jadeja is a good friend who visited and wished me a speedy recovery. Many others called to check on me and expressed their desire to see me healthy again,” Kambli noted.
