Hampshire Hawks have confirmed that pace bowler Chris Wood will take on the role of captain for the inaugural Global Super League 2024, set to take place in Guyana. Wood, a left-arm pacer, holds the title of Hampshire's all-time leading T20 wicket taker, with an impressive 191 wickets to his name. He also ranks as the fourth-leading wicket taker in the history of the Vitality Blast.

Wood’s appointment as captain comes after club captain James Vince was ruled out of the tournament due to his prior commitment to play for Delhi Bulls in the Abu Dhabi T10, which runs from November 21 to December 2.

“It’s a great privilege to captain Hampshire in the Global Super League," said Wood. "I had one game of it a few years ago, and I’m really looking forward to getting out in Guyana and captaining the team.”

Wood has been a key figure for Hampshire since making his T20 debut in 2010 against Kent. Over the years, he has contributed significantly to the club's success, winning five white-ball trophies, including three T20 titles in 2010, 2012, and 2022. His exceptional performance in recent years, with 48 wickets at an economy rate of 7.88, has solidified his reputation as one of the best seamers in the competition.

In recognition of his outstanding service to Hampshire Cricket, Wood was awarded a testimonial year for 2024 and signed a one-year contract extension earlier this summer, ensuring his stay at Utilita Bowl until at least the end of 2025.

Wood has also shown remarkable skill in the powerplay and death overs, with only three seamers in the Vitality Blast boasting better economy rates in those phases.
