Hasan Mahmud creates history with five-wicket haul against India

Bangladesh fast bowler Hasan Mahmud etched his name in history books with a sensational performance in the first innings of the Chennai Test against India. The young pacer claimed a five-wicket haul, becoming the first Bangladeshi bowler to achieve this feat on Indian soil.

Before him, fast bowler Abu Jayed held the record for the best bowling figures by a Bangladesh bowler in Indian conditions, having taken 4 wickets for 108 runs at Indore in 2019.

Mahmud's 5-83 in 22.2 overs helped Bangladesh dismiss India for 376 in their first innings. His new-ball partner, Taskin Ahmed, also made significant contributions with 3-55.

The highlight of Mahmud's spell was his early dismissals of Rohit Sharma, Shubman Gill, and Virat Kohli, reducing India to 34-3 in the first 10 overs. The young bowler's confidence soared after these wickets, and he continued to bowl with precision and accuracy.

Rishabh Pant's counter-attack threatened to take India to a substantial total, but Mahmud returned to dismiss him for 39. This was his fourth wicket of the day, showcasing his dominance throughout the innings.

Despite Mahmud's heroics, India's lower order, led by Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja, capitalized on Bangladesh's spinners' struggles to add crucial runs.

Searching for a five-wicket haul, Hasan gave it his all and finally dismissed Jasprit Bumrah, achieving a historic milestone on Indian soil. The 24-year-old is now expected to raise his game in every innings of the series. 

Previously, he also claimed a five-wicket haul against Pakistan, finishing the last series with 8 wickets in 2 Tests, making him the third-highest wicket-taker.

Bangladesh are struggling with the bat, having lost half their side for under 100 runs. Jasprit Bumrah, Akash Deep, and Mohammad Siraj have all contributed by taking crucial wickets.
