Jasprit Bumrah and Sam Konstas added drama to the opening day of the final Border-Gavaskar Test at the Sydney Cricket Ground. The fiery exchange between India’s stand-in captain and the young Australian batter has set the stage for an intense battle when play resumes on Saturday.

Australia started their innings with just 15 minutes left in the day. Sam Konstas made an aggressive statement by stepping out to Bumrah’s first delivery and flicking it through midwicket. The bold move sparked a verbal exchange between the two, which escalated further as the day unfolded.

In a moment of gamesmanship, Usman Khawaja pulled away from the strike late in the over, seemingly trying to run out the clock and avoid another over being bowled. Konstas turned to Bumrah and said something, prompting umpire Sharfuddoula to step in and diffuse the situation.

The drama peaked with the final ball of the day when Bumrah dismissed Khawaja, catching the edge to second slip. Bumrah then turned to Konstas at the non-striker’s end, locking eyes and taking a few steps toward him in celebration, before being joined by his jubilant teammates.

Rishabh Pant, reflecting on the incident, said, "I feel they had a little chit-chat. They wanted to waste some time. I feel that's the reason he had a conversation with Jassi [Bumrah]. He [Konstas] said something, I didn't hear it, but I feel that's the only thing which he wanted to do to just waste some time so we don't bowl one more over."

Australia ended the day at 9 for 1, trailing India’s first innings score of 185.

Beau Webster, commenting on Konstas’ approach, said, "Sammy's a very confident young man, it's what they do these days, those youngsters, they get after it and put themselves out there. He's got all the skills and all the talent to back it up, so hopefully he has a really good day tomorrow and puts a few runs on the board."

Konstas has already made his mark on the series. In his debut innings at the MCG, he scored 60 off 65 balls and frequently challenged Bumrah with innovative shots. The duel continued in the second innings, where Bumrah dismissed him for just 8.

Despite his on-field aggression, Konstas’ mentor Shane Watson described him as a quiet and thoughtful personality off the field. "My experience of dealing and working with Sam has been a very quiet, reserved personality. [He's] a very deep thinker and certainly not an extrovert. But obviously, what we saw in the Test match is that he absolutely is a showman," Watson said.

For India, Bumrah’s late breakthrough has reignited hopes of retaining the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. Webster acknowledged the challenge Bumrah poses, saying, "Jasprit is a world-class bowler and no doubt he's going to challenge our whole batting group. He's phenomenal with his lengths and lines, it is going to be tough on a wicket that will offer a fair bit for him."

Rishabh Pant admitted India’s total was below expectations but remained optimistic. "I think I wouldn't say it's a par score, I think anything over 220 to 250 would be a par score. But still a very competitive score because the way the ball is moving now I think there's a lot of help for the bowler and hopefully we can capitalise on that," he said.
