HBL Pakistan Super League (PSL) commenced in 2016 compared to the Indian Premier League (IPL) which started eight years before Pakistan's biggest domestic cricket event.

In the seven years of HBL PSL history, opportunities were provided to young and emerging players from all around the globe to showcase their talent and make it big on the international stage.

The likes of Shadab Khan, Hasan Ali, Asif Ali, Liam Livingstone, Dawid Malan, Sam Billings, Phil Salt, and many others came to notice due to their participation in the league.

Whereas, the IPL is a more established franchise competition and has the budget to offer big money to world-class players around the world.

Renowned names such as Pat Cummins, David Warner, Kagiso Rabada, Kane Williamson, Quinton de Kock, Glenn Maxwell are part of the league.

The amount of difference in the pay scale of the two leagues is no secret and looking at the IPL 2022 Auction, it has become more prominent. To give a small example, Tim David of Multan Sultan was paid $130,000 in PSL was sold to Mumbai Indians for $1.1 Million in the IPL.

Although players will now play more matches in the IPL as they have ten teams in the 2022 season, they follow a double round-robin format compared to six teams in the HBL PSL who play fewer matches as compared to IPL.

PSL offers salaries to the players according to categories:

  • Platinum category ranges between $130,000-170,000
  • Diamond category ranges between $70,000-85,000
  • Gold category ranges between $40,000-50,000
  • Sliver category ranges between $15,000-25,000
  • Emerging category ranges between $5,000-7,500

Before the start of PSL 7, discussions were held between Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Chairman, Ramiz Raja, and the owners of the six franchises to adopt an auction model to increase the pay scale to attract more renowned players. But the result was not favourable due to the lack of budgets of the franchises.
