Sri Lankan cricketer Kamindu Mendis has emerged victorious in the race for the ICC Men’s Player of the Month Award for March 2024, surpassing competitors such as Ireland's Mark Adair and New Zealand's Matt Henry.

This achievement marks Mendis as the third Sri Lankan player to clinch this prestigious title, following in the footsteps of Prabath Jayasuriya and Wanindu Hasaranga.

Mendis expressed his joy and gratitude upon receiving the award, viewing it as a significant source of inspiration for his ongoing journey in international cricket.

"I am extremely happy to be named the ICC Men's Player of the Month, which I consider an inspiration for my international career," Mendis expressed. "A recognition such as this motivates and makes us as players work more and more to deliver in the middle for the team, country, and fans.

"I also wish the very best for the other two players who were nominated along with me, Mark Adair and Matt Henry, whom I consider excellent players and good competitors."

The 25-year-old cricketer made a remarkable comeback to the Sri Lankan team after a hiatus since 2022. His outstanding performance during the month included a noteworthy contribution of 68 runs in the series against Bangladesh, with a standout 102-run innings during the first Test where he partnered with Dhananjaya de Silva in a crucial 202-run partnership.

Mendis' exceptional batting prowess, particularly in the longer format of the game, earned him accolades as he became the first player batting at number seven or lower to achieve two centuries in a single Test match. Sri Lanka's victory over Bangladesh in that match, with Mendis playing a pivotal role, showcased his determination and skill on the cricketing stage.

Maia Bouchier of England clinches the ICC Women’s Player of the Month award, credited to her impressive performance in New Zealand where England sealed a notable 4-1 victory in the T20I series during March.

“First of all, thank you to everyone who voted for me. I am so happy and grateful to everyone: my family and partner and the staff and my teammates who have supported me whilst playing at the international level.

“I am so honoured to have won this award and I hope there are many more to come. It's been such an amazing couple of months, from training through the winter with my coaches at home and transferring what I've been working on into this series, so I am really glad I have been able to perform for the team.”
