This marks the second time both players have claimed these awards
Sri Lanka's Kamindu Mendis and England's Tammy Beaumont have been named the ICC Players of the Month for September 2024, recognizing their outstanding performances in both Test and limited-overs cricket.
Mendis continued his impressive run in Test cricket to win the ICC Men’s Player of the Month award, while Beaumont shined in England’s white-ball series against Ireland, earning her the ICC Women’s Player of the Month accolade.
This marks the second time both players have claimed these awards. Mendis first won in March 2024, and Beaumont previously took home the title in February 2021.
Mendis faced tough competition from Australia’s Travis Head and his fellow Sri Lankan, Prabath Jayasuriya. Meanwhile, Beaumont beat out Ireland's Aimee Maguire and UAE's Esha Oza for the women's award.
For Sri Lanka, Mendis' achievement follows a strong period of recognition, with teammates Dunith Wellalage and Harshitha Samarawickrama winning the awards in August. The 26-year-old has been in top form in Test cricket this year, and his remarkable performances in September were key to his success.
Mendis scored an impressive 451 runs in four Tests during September, with an average of 90.20. His stellar performances came in the ICC World Test Championship series in England and at home against New Zealand. He made key contributions, including scores of 74 and 64 in England, followed by a brilliant 114 and 182 in the two Tests against New Zealand in Galle. His 182 in the second Test helped Sri Lanka secure an innings victory.
Mendis also made history in September, becoming the first player to score fifty or more in each of his first eight Test matches. Additionally, he became the fastest batter in 75 years to reach 1,000 Test runs.
Expressing his joy, Mendis said, "I am honored to be once again chosen as the ICC Men’s Player of the Month. This accolade brings me immense happiness and pride. It shows that all the hard work I’ve put in is paying off and being recognized globally. This recognition gives me the strength to continue performing and helping my team win games for Sri Lanka."
On the women's side, Tammy Beaumont impressed with 279 runs from five matches against Ireland in September. Her standout performance came in the second ODI, where she scored a magnificent 150 from 139 balls. She followed this with another half-century in the final ODI, along with scores of 27 and 40 in the T20I series, which ended in a draw.
Beaumont’s win makes her the first English player to claim the Women’s Player of the Month award since Maia Bouchier in March.
Reacting to her award, Beaumont said, "Thank you to everyone who voted for me as ICC Women’s Player of the Month for September. It was a great tour in Ireland with a young England team, and it was nice to contribute personally. I also want to congratulate Aimee Maguire and Esha Oza for their performances."
