Nepal cricketer Sandeep Lamichhane has been granted permission by the International Cricket Council (ICC) to join Nepal’s squad for the upcoming ICC T20 World Cup 2024.

This development marks a dramatic comeback for the talented leg-spinner, who has been embroiled in a highly publicized legal battle.

Lamichhane’s career faced a severe setback in September 2022 when he was arrested and charged with raping an 18-year-old girl. The charges led to an eight-year prison sentence, seemingly putting an end to his burgeoning cricket career. The case received widespread attention, and Lamichhane, once a celebrated sports icon in Nepal, found his reputation in tatters.

However, the Patan High Court recently overturned Lamichhane’s conviction, clearing him of all charges and lifting the financial penalties imposed on him. This ruling has paved the way for his return to international cricket. Following the court’s decision, the Cricket Association of Nepal (CAN) lifted Lamichhane’s suspension, enabling him to be considered for selection.

The ICC’s approval now means that Lamichhane will have the chance to represent Nepal on the global stage once again, potentially playing a crucial role in the team’s campaign at the T20 World Cup.
