Australia continued to dominate, leaving India needing 195 more runs to avoid the follow-on
Australia's fast bowlers put India under pressure on a stop-start third day in the third Test at the Gabba. With frequent rain interruptions limiting play to just 33.1 overs, Australia continued to dominate, leaving India needing 195 more runs to avoid the follow-on.
Australia's first innings ended with a total of 445, with Alex Carey making 70, including a six over long-off, before being dismissed by Akash Deep. Pat Cummins, the Australian captain, was the last to fall, leaving Jasprit Bumrah with six wickets in the innings. India’s bowlers had a tough time against the home side's batting depth.
In response, India’s top order struggled against Australia’s fast bowlers. Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood, and Pat Cummins found plenty of movement and bounce off the pitch. The first breakthrough came quickly as Yashasvi Jaiswal fell to Starc’s second ball, caught by Mitchell Marsh at square leg. Starc struck again in his second over, dismissing Shubman Gill with a brilliant catch from Marsh at gully.
Virat Kohli, who has been struggling in the series, fell for just 3 when he edged a wide ball from Hazlewood behind the stumps. The rain forced an early lunch, but when play resumed, India continued to lose wickets. Rishabh Pant was dismissed by Cummins after a well-angled delivery caught his edge.
KL Rahul showed some resistance, batting carefully for 33 not out at stumps, while Rohit Sharma was yet to get off the mark. At the close of play, India was 51 for 4, still trailing Australia by 394 runs.
With two more days of play left, rain is expected to continue, adding to the challenges for both teams. Australia is on track to take a 2-1 series lead if they can continue their dominance.
