Shanto admitted that Bangladesh's batting performance was below par in both games, failing to convert good starts into big scores
Bangladesh skipper Najmul Hossain Shanto expressed his disappointment after Bangladesh faced a 2-0 series whitewash against India in the two-match Test series.
Shanto admitted that Bangladesh's batting performance was below par in both games, failing to convert good starts into big scores.
Coming off a 2-0 series win against Pakistan, Bangladesh started strong with the ball in the first Test in Chennai but couldn’t maintain their form throughout the series. India, led by Rohit Sharma, outplayed them, resulting in a clean sweep.
Reflecting on the loss, Shanto acknowledged the poor batting display, stating that adapting to Indian conditions was crucial but the team couldn’t capitalize. He emphasized how many Bangladeshi batters got out after facing 30-40 deliveries without making substantial contributions.
"Both the Tests we didn't bat well. In these conditions we need to bat well. If you look at our batters - we played 30-40 balls and got out. It's important in a Test match, when batsmen get in, you should look to score big runs," Shanto said.
Shanto also highlighted the decisive partnership between India's Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja in the first Test, which turned the tide in India’s favor. He said that Bangladesh’s bowlers must learn how to take wickets during key moments. Despite the loss, Shanto praised his teammates Mominul Haque and Mehidy Hasan Miraz for their efforts.
"The way Ashwin and Jaddu batted at that time - they batted really well. As a bowling unit we need to look at those moments - how we can get those wickets. That partnership cost us that game. The way Mominul batted this innings will help going forward. And the was Miraz bowled in both innings - he bowled really well," Shanto added.
It is worth noting that Shanto himself had a decent series, scoring 152 runs across four innings at an average of 38. His best knock came in the second innings of the first Test, where he scored 82 runs from 127 balls, including eight boundaries and three sixes.
