New Zealand's hopes of extending their lead in the Test series against India have taken a significant hit with the announcement that former captain Kane Williamson will miss the second Test starting in Pune on October 24. Williamson is still in recovery from a groin strain he sustained during the team's tour of Sri Lanka last month.

The 34-year-old star did not travel with the squad to India, opting to remain at home to continue his rehabilitation. In his absence, Will Young stepped up to bat at No. 3 during the first Test in Bengaluru, where he scored 33 and remained unbeaten on 48 in the second innings.

"We're monitoring Kane and he's tracking in the right direction, but isn't yet 100% fit," said New Zealand coach Gary Stead said.

"We're hopeful to see further improvement over the coming days and have him available for the third Test. We'll give him as much time as possible to get himself ready, but certainly continue to take a cautious approach."

New Zealand currently leads the three-Test series 1-0 after a convincing eight-wicket victory in the first Test, where Rachin Ravindra was named Player of the Match for his remarkable century in the first innings and an unbeaten 39 in the chase. Bowlers Matt Henry and Will O'Rourke shone brightly, taking eight and seven wickets respectively throughout the match.

The New Zealand team arrived in Pune on Monday evening and is scheduled to hold their first practice session in the city on Tuesday.
