Although the current standings put pressure on India, their previous performances in Australia suggest they are still strong contenders for the final
India, a familiar face in the World Test Championship (WTC) finals, now faces uncertainty about their chances of reaching the WTC final after a tough start to the Test series against New Zealand. Having lost the first Test to the Kiwis, the team’s position at the top of the WTC standings appears shaken, and the ongoing second Test in Pune has only added to the pressure. After bowling New Zealand out for 259, India struggled with the bat, managing only 156 runs, largely due to a seven-wicket haul from Mitchell Santner.
Currently, India leads the WTC points table with a points percentage (PCT) of 68.06 and 98 points after winning eight of their 12 matches in this cycle. Australia follows closely with a PCT of 62.50 and 90 points. South Africa, sitting in fourth place, is working to secure its place in the final by preparing for a home series against Pakistan and Sri Lanka after completing an away series in Bangladesh.
If India loses the Pune Test, they will need to win at least three of their remaining six matches to retain hopes for their third consecutive WTC final appearance. Their performance in the upcoming Border-Gavaskar Trophy series in Australia could be crucial, as India has shown strength in the country over the past six years.
Although the current standings put pressure on India, their previous performances in Australia suggest they are still strong contenders for the final. A few victories in their remaining matches could very well see them secure their spot once again in the WTC final.
