Following Rohit Sharma's decision to step down from T20I cricket after leading India to a victorious ICC T20 World Cup campaign, all-rounder Hardik Pandya is set to take over as the captain of the Indian T20I team.

Concurrently, sources indicate that wicketkeeper-batter KL Rahul will assume leadership responsibilities for the ODI matches.

This decision marks a significant transition in the Indian team's leadership as Rohit Sharma's tenure comes to an end. The change is expected to open up opportunities for the next generation of players to step up and take on more significant roles within the team.

"Hardik Pandya is all set to lead the Indian team in T20Is. Rohit Sharma announced his retirement, and Hardik is also unlikely to be rested for the upcoming series against Sri Lanka," BCCI sources told.

"KL Rahul will lead the Indian team in ODIs in the absence of Rohit Sharma, as the board believes he performs well in the longer format," the sources added.

Previously, former Indian cricketer Gautam Gambhir was appointed Head Coach of the national cricket team following an announcement by BCCI secretary Jay Shah on Tuesday.

It is worth noting that Sri Lanka will host the 2024 T20 World Cup champions India for a limited-overs home series from July to August, comprising three T20Is and three ODIs.
