India took firm control of the first Test against Bangladesh, extending their lead to 308 runs after dismissing the visitors for 149, thanks to a fiery spell from fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah. By stumps on day two in Chennai, India was 81-3 in their second innings, with Shubman Gill unbeaten on 33 and wicketkeeper-batsman Rishabh Pant on 12.

Bangladesh's bowlers showed fight, with Taskin Ahmed claiming skipper Rohit Sharma's wicket for just five, while fellow pacer Nahid Rana had Yashasvi Jaiswal caught behind for 10. Spinner Mehidy Hasan Miraz trapped Virat Kohli lbw for 17, though UltraEdge later revealed an unnoticed edge on Kohli's bat.

Bangladesh's innings crumbled in response to India's first-innings total of 376. Former captain Shakib Al Hasan top-scored with 32 before Bangladesh was bowled out in the final session. India opted not to enforce the follow-on, seeking to build on their 227-run lead.

Earlier, Ravichandran Ashwin's magnificent 113 in a 199-run stand with Ravindra Jadeja (86) had propelled India to a commanding total after being 339-6 overnight. Bangladesh's Taskin Ahmed struck early to break the partnership, finishing with 3-87, while Hasan Mahmud’s five-wicket haul (5-83) wrapped up India’s innings.

Bangladesh's top order faltered, with Akash Deep and Bumrah reducing them to 40-5. Bumrah bowled Shadman Islam for two, and Deep's double strike removed Zakir Hasan (3) and Mominul Haque (0) before lunch. Shakib and Litton Das (22) briefly resisted, but Jadeja and Bumrah quickly dismantled the middle and lower order, leaving Mehidy Hasan unbeaten on 27.

India, ranked top in the World Test Championship, is off to a strong start in their 10-match Test season, while Bangladesh continues to struggle, having never beaten India in the format.
