Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have officially signed young South African batter Dewald Brevis as a replacement for pacer Gurjapneet Singh for the remainder of the IPL 2025 season.

With one overseas slot still open, CSK moved quickly to bring in the 21-year-old rising star. Though Brevis had a base price of just INR 75 lakh in the IPL auction last year, the franchise acquired him for a significant INR 2.2 crore — showing strong faith in his ability and future potential.

Often nicknamed "Baby AB" for his aggressive and innovative batting style, Brevis has drawn comparisons with South African legend AB de Villiers. Despite limited experience at the international level, he has been in the spotlight for several years thanks to his performances in leagues across the world.

Brevis previously played for Mumbai Indians in the IPL, featuring in 10 matches. He continues to represent MI's teams in both Major League Cricket (MLC) and the SA20 league. Most recently, he had an impressive SA20 campaign where he finished among the top 10 run-scorers and registered the highest strike rate in the tournament — 184.17.

The right-hander also enjoyed a strong domestic season for the Titans, performing consistently in both List A and first-class formats.

His arrival comes at a crucial time for CSK, who are struggling this season. With just two wins at the halfway point, the five-time IPL champions sit at the bottom of the table. The franchise will be hoping that Brevis brings the spark they need to turn things around.

This marks CSK’s second replacement signing this season. Earlier, they brought in Ayush Mhatre in place of regular skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad, who is out due to injury.

CSK's next game is a high-stakes clash against their traditional rivals, Mumbai Indians, scheduled to take place at the Wankhede Stadium on April 20.
