Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) registered their first-ever win against Chennai Super Kings (CSK) at Chepauk, thanks to strong performances from Kamindu Mendis and Harshal Patel. SRH chased down 155 with five wickets in hand and eight balls to spare, keeping their playoff hopes alive in IPL 2025.

SRH’s bowling unit, led by Harshal Patel’s 4 for 28, restricted CSK to 154 on a dry surface that offered help to the bowlers despite the presence of heavy dew later in the match. Pat Cummins and Jaydev Unadkat supported well with two wickets each.

CSK, who have now lost four home matches this season, found some positives in young talents. Dewald Brevis impressed in his debut innings for CSK, scoring 42 off 25 balls, while 17-year-old Ayush Mhatre looked promising once again with a quick 30. Brevis, known for his attacking style, smashed Kamindu for three sixes in an over and looked set for a big score before he was dismissed by a stunning catch.

Earlier, Mhatre and Sam Curran started well after Mohammed Shami picked a wicket off the first ball. But SRH quickly adjusted by bowling shorter lengths and forcing CSK batters to hit to the leg side. This plan worked as wickets began to fall. Brevis provided some resistance in the middle overs, but after his dismissal, CSK failed to find any late momentum, finishing with a below-par total.

In reply, SRH also lost early wickets, including Travis Head who was bowled by Anshul Kamboj after struggling to read the line. Ishan Kishan played a steady hand, scoring 44, but just as he looked set to take off, he was caught by Sam Curran at deep midwicket.

With SRH needing 49 from the last 6.1 overs, Kamindu Mendis stepped up with a composed unbeaten 32 off 22 balls. He, along with Nitish Reddy, guided the team home with a calm 49-run partnership, never needing to take big risks. Extras from the CSK bowlers and some smart placement helped them cross the line without hitting a single six in the final phase.

This win might push SRH to rethink their approach going forward, especially with Kamindu proving his value as both a bowler and batter. For CSK, despite the loss, young players like Brevis and Mhatre showed promise in what has been a tough season at home.
