Punjab Kings have named in-form Australian batter Mitchell Owen as the replacement for Glenn Maxwell, who has been ruled out of the ongoing IPL 2025 due to a fractured finger.

Owen is currently playing for Peshawar Zalmi in the Pakistan Super League (PSL) and will join PBKS for a reported sum of INR 3 crore once Zalmi’s campaign ends. As of now, Zalmi are fifth on the points table and are set to play their final group-stage match on May 9. If they qualify for the playoffs, Owen might stay in Pakistan until May 18, the day of the PSL final.

The 23-year-old from Tasmania came into the spotlight during the latest Big Bash League (BBL) season, where he was the top scorer and helped the Hobart Hurricanes win the title. He scored 452 runs in 11 innings at an average of 45.20 and an impressive strike rate of 203.60. His standout moment came in the final, where he smashed 108 off 42 balls and was named Player of the Match.

Apart from his batting, Owen also bowls medium pace and has taken 10 wickets in 20 T20 innings.

His signing has been supported by Punjab Kings’ head coach Ricky Ponting, who has followed Owen’s development closely during his time with the Hurricanes.

With Owen’s arrival, PBKS will be hoping to strengthen their squad as the IPL 2025 playoffs approach.
