IPL 2025: Shreyas Iyer leads Punjab Kings to victory over Gujarat Titans

Shreyas Iyer's outstanding 97* powered Punjab Kings (PBKS) to a 11-run victory over Gujarat Titans in their opening match of the 2025 IPL season. The win came after a fantastic display of batting, where PBKS posted their second highest-ever total of 243/5.

Iyer’s innings was the highlight of the match, as he played an aggressive knock that included nine sixes. Despite being on 97 when the final over began, Iyer made it clear he wasn’t concerned about reaching a century, encouraging his partner Shashank Singh to focus on the team’s target instead. Iyer’s explosive knock helped propel PBKS to a commanding total, and his ability to seize scoring opportunities, especially against bowlers like Kagiso Rabada and Rashid Khan, was crucial.

Iyer, who had previously expressed his desire to bat at number three, demonstrated why he wanted that spot, taking full advantage of the dew-laden conditions. His partnership with Shashank Singh, who also impressed with an unbeaten 44*, added a remarkable 81 runs in just 28 balls.

Priyansh Arya, another new face in the PBKS line-up, played a key role early on. Arya, who was praised by coach Ricky Ponting in the pre-season, made 47 runs, providing solid support during the powerplay and ensuring that the team had a strong foundation in the early overs. 

For Gujarat Titans, Sai Sudharsan was the standout performer, scoring a quickfire 74 off 41 balls. Sudharsan’s innings was a crucial part of a fightback after the Titans fell behind in the game. He, along with Jos Buttler (54), led a late surge that put them in contention, but the Titans could not finish strongly, finishing with 232/5, falling short by 11 runs.

Arshdeep Singh's impact with the ball was significant, as he helped PBKS to stifle Gujarat’s chase. 

Despite a strong late innings from Gujarat, PBKS held their nerve, winning the match by 11 runs. This victory not only gave them a strong start to the season but also showcased the impact of Shreyas Iyer's leadership and his match-winning batting performance.
