Ireland cricketer Simi Singh has successfully undergone a liver transplant surgery at Medanta Hospital in Gurgaon. The all-rounder shared the news on Instagram, revealing that the 12-hour operation was a success and that his wife was the liver donor.

“Hi guyz. Just an update that I’ve gone through my liver transplant surgery. And it was a 12-hour long surgery, and now I’m in a recovery phase,” Singh posted on his Instagram story.

“I’m extremely fortunate to have my wife, who eventually became my donor,” he further added.

The 37-year-old cricketer, who played 35 ODIs and 53 T20Is between 2017 and 2022, explained that his liver failure was caused by incorrectly prescribed antibiotics and steroids. Earlier this month, Singh's father-in-law, Parvinder Singh, shared the hhad been experiencing a recurring fever since early 2024 in Dublin. After no clear diagnosis there, Singh's family decided to seek treatment in India.

"Some five to six months back, when he was in Dublin, Ireland, Simi developed a strange fever that kept coming and going. He got himself examined there, but nothing conclusive came out in the check-ups. The medical professionals there said that they couldn't find the underlying cause and therefore they wouldn't start medication…The process was getting delayed, and his health was deteriorating, so we decided to get him treated in India for 'better medical attention'.

“But his health kept deteriorating, and the PGI physicians detected that he had developed acute liver failure. They advised us to take Simi to Medanta, Gurugram, because there was a high probability of him slipping into a coma, after which a transplant wouldn't be possible. We came to Medanta on September 3.” Parvinder said.
