He took 71 wickets in just 13 Test matches, the highest by any bowler that year
Indian fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah has been awarded the prestigious Sir Garfield Sobers Award for ICC Men’s Cricketer of the Year 2024, following an exceptional year of performances across all formats. His incredible consistency and ability to dominate both Test and T20I cricket have earned him recognition as one of the best fast bowlers in the world.
Bumrah, who defeated fellow nominees Travis Head, Joe Root, and Harry Brook for the honor, became the fifth Indian cricketer to win this award, joining the ranks of Rahul Dravid (2004), Sachin Tendulkar (2010), Ravichandran Ashwin (2016), and Virat Kohli (2017, 2018).
The 31-year-old’s achievements in 2024 were remarkable. He became the fastest Indian pacer to reach 200 Test wickets, with an average below 20, which is the best in history. His performance in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 was also outstanding, where he took 15 wickets at an average of 8.26 and an economy rate of 4.17, earning him the Player of the Tournament award and leading India to their first T20 World Cup title in 17 years.
Bumrah’s 2024 in numbers showcases his brilliance across formats. He took 71 wickets in just 13 Test matches, the highest by any bowler that year. His 32 wickets in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy series were pivotal to India’s success, and his 77 wickets in the 2023-2025 World Test Championship cycle set a new record for pacers.
Some of Bumrah’s most memorable performances came in crucial matches. He delivered a match-changing 3-14 spell against Pakistan in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, which helped India secure a narrow six-run victory. He also played a vital role in India’s T20 World Cup final victory over South Africa, taking 2-18 in four overs, including key wickets.
