Joe Root has made it clear that he is open to a potential return to England's T20 squad, despite having not played in the format since 2019. Calls for his inclusion have been growing, especially with England’s struggles in T20 cricket following their semi-final exit from the 2024 T20 World Cup.

Root, who is 34, has remained a key figure in England's Test team and became the country's top run-scorer in the format in 2024. His impressive form in the South African T20 league, SA20, with Paarl Royals has sparked increased discussions about his potential return to the shorter format.

The England squad is currently engaged in a five-match T20 series against India, trailing 2-1 after losing the first two games. Some of the players have been underperforming, leading to calls for Root's inclusion.

Speaking to broadcast channel, Root explained his stance, saying: “I think you're always a better player when you're not in the team. I’m just going to try to play the best cricket I can.” He added that while he would love to play as much as possible for England in all formats, he knows that he needs to continue playing T20 cricket and proving himself in the format.

Root also pointed out the level of talent in England's current T20 squad, stating: “You look at that squad and it’s full of talented players who can take the game away from the best bowlers in the world. They’ve got two more opportunities to turn things around.”

The growing calls for Root's return to the T20 setup come as England prepare for the 2026 T20 World Cup, which will be held in India and Sri Lanka. Former England captain Alastair Cook and ex-fast bowler Steven Finn have both urged current head coach Brendon McCullum to bring Root back into the fold for the tournament.

Cook emphasized Root’s experience, particularly his success in India during the 2016 T20 World Cup, where he was England's top run-scorer. Cook believes Root’s ability to handle spin and perform on big occasions could be crucial for England in the upcoming World Cup.

Similarly, Finn highlighted Root’s past achievements in India, where he excelled in the 2016 edition of the tournament. “Clearly, the way he plays and his relationship with Brendon McCullum is brilliant. It wouldn’t be beyond the realms of possibility to look towards Joe Root if England continue to struggle against spin,” Finn said.
