Kamindu Mendis has made history by becoming the fastest batter in 75 years to reach 1000 Test runs. In Sri Lanka's first innings against New Zealand in Galle, Kamindu hit an unbeaten 182, reaching the milestone in just 13 innings. By doing so, he matched the legendary Don Bradman’s record, making them both the third-fastest in Test history to achieve this feat. Only Herbert Sutcliffe and Everton Weekes have reached 1000 runs in fewer innings (12).

Kamindu achieved the milestone in spectacular style, hitting a six off Rachin Ravindra’s left-arm spin to surpass the 178 runs he needed to hit quadruple figures. What's remarkable about his achievement is that 634 of his 1004 runs came from a batting position of No. 7 or lower. However, in this match, Kamindu batted at No. 5, having been promoted up the order for this series.

With an impressive average of 91.27 and a strike rate of 65.02, Kamindu has been in remarkable form. He has crossed 50 runs nine times in his 13 innings, scored five centuries, and passed 150 twice, with his highest score now being this unbeaten 182. His consistency is clear, with centuries scored in three different countries this year - Bangladesh, England, and Sri Lanka.

Kamindu’s 13-innings journey to 1000 runs comfortably breaks the Sri Lankan record previously held by Roy Dias, who achieved it in 23 innings. Last year, Yashasvi Jaiswal had become the fastest batter of the 21st century to reach 1000 Test runs, achieving it in 16 innings.
