Pakistan has been handed a significant fitness boost with fast bowler Khurram Shahzad avoiding a serious injury scare.

Shahzad, who left the field on the final day of the Test series against Bangladesh, had concerns about a possible major injury after experiencing pain and stiffness on his left side.

Bangladesh secured a 2-0 series victory in Rawalpindi, but Shahzad’s performance, especially in the first innings, was a silver lining for Pakistan.

The quick bowler was instrumental in dismantling Bangladesh’s batting lineup, claiming career-best figures of 6 for 90 as the visitors collapsed to 26 for 6. However, Shahzad’s effectiveness waned in the second innings, where he took just 1 for 40 in seven overs.

Following the match, he was sent for scans, with initial fears of a more severe injury looming due to his past injury history.

Fortunately, ESPNcricinfo reports that scans have ruled out any fractures. Doctors have recommended a short period of rest, making Shahzad likely to be fit for Pakistan's upcoming Test series against England. This diagnosis provides relief for both Shahzad and the team, given his long struggle with injuries.

The 24-year-old’s recent injury history has been a concern, especially since his debut in Perth last December, where a stress fracture in his rib sidelined him for months. His return to the national team for the Bangladesh series was his first competitive appearance in first-class cricket since the injury, and the latest niggle raised fears of another long layoff.

As a precaution, Khurram Shahzad will miss the Champions One-Day Cup starting next week, allowing Pakistan to ensure he is in peak condition ahead of the Tests against England. Another MRI scan is scheduled to monitor his progress.

Pakistan’s fast-bowling department has been significantly affected by injuries, with key bowlers including Shaheen Afridi, Naseem Shah, Haris Rauf, Mohammad Hasnain, Hasan Ali, and Ihsanullah all facing long-term absences. The medical team has faced criticism for its handling of injuries, and Dr. Sohail Saleem, Pakistan's chief medical officer, resigned earlier this year following a critical internal review of Ihsanullah's injury management.

It is worth noting that the upcoming Champions ODI Cup will take place from September 12-29 in Faisalabad. Following this, Pakistan will face England in a three-match Test series from October 7-28, with matches scheduled in Multan and Rawalpindi.
