Lahore Qalandars COO addresses challenges of PSL 10 clashing with IPL

Sameen Rana, the COO of the two-time Pakistan Super League (PSL) champions Lahore Qalandars, has addressed the adjustments to the PSL 10 schedule due to the upcoming 2025 Champions Trophy in February-March. 

For the first time, the PSL will not take place in its usual time frame, prompting officials to push the tournament dates forward.

"Due to the Champions Trophy, the PSL will not occur in its usual time frame for the first time; therefore, the dates for the PSL will be pushed forward. However, we are pleased that the ICC event is taking place in Pakistan. We pray for its success and look forward to witnessing the star players from all eight teams in action on our home ground," Rana said in an interview.

The tenth edition of PSL will coincide with the IPL for the first time, creating challenges and opportunities, as players not participating in the IPL will be available for an extended period without overlapping events.

"The upcoming edition of the PSL will coincide with the IPL for the first time, presenting a unique challenge. This overlap will provide a new experience, as no other cricket events will be taking place during that time, allowing players not participating in the IPL to be available for a longer duration," he said.

On the topic of direct player signings for the PSL, Rana emphasized that it could be beneficial if a better list of available players is provided.

"It would be beneficial to have an improved list available for direct signings. If players not participating in the IPL are accessible for direct signing, then it diminishes the overall advantage," he remarked, highlighting the need for strategic planning in player acquisitions.

Additionally, a proposal to hold the PSL 10 playoffs in England was discussed a few months ago. Rana expressed strong reservations about moving the playoffs overseas, citing the significant sacrifices made to bring the PSL to Pakistan. 

"We have brought the PSL to Pakistan after making great sacrifices, ensuring that international cricket could consistently thrive here. Our security forces have made significant sacrifices, and our fans have shown immense dedication. Now, after all these efforts, we are discussing the possibility of moving cricket events abroad again. Before we consider this, we need to understand the benefits of taking the playoffs overseas. If any clear advantages can be demonstrated, we are willing to support this decision," he concluded.
