New Zealand batter Tom Latham has expressed that the BlackCaps will miss the presence of Kane Williamson during the upcoming home season.
However, he highlighted the positive aspect, noting it as an excellent opportunity for other players to step up and deliver.
Williamson will miss several matches after opting out of the central contracts, a significant decision following his resignation as the T20I captain after New Zealand's early exit from the T20 World Cup.
Despite stepping down from the central contract, Williamson has secured a casual agreement with the board, ensuring his availability for selection as one of the key players in the setup.
He is expected to participate in the SA20 in January, causing him to miss a white-ball series against Sri Lanka. Nevertheless, Williamson will be part of the New Zealand squad for their home Test series against England in November and December.
"I think we've seen over many years now at times we haven't had those senior guys whether (because) they're playing in the IPL (Indian Premier League) or having a rest. From my point of view it gives me an opportunity as a senior player to step up and lead as well. But also other guys that haven't necessarily had those opportunities in the past to step up as well in different leadership roles," Tom Latham said.
"It's never great when you miss guys of Kane's caliber but it gives opportunities to other guys to put their best foot forward," he added.
Trent Boult was the first to relinquish his central contract in August 2022, continuing to play for New Zealand in major tournaments. Following his lead, Williamson, Lockie Ferguson, and Adam Milne also gave up their central contracts.
Latham acknowledged the evolving cricket landscape with the rise of franchise-based T20 leagues. In the New Zealand home season schedule, the only Test assignment is a three-match series against England. Following this, the BlackCaps will play ODI and T20I series against Sri Lanka and Pakistan.
"There's no test franchise stuff. So if that comes out, that'd be great. But yeah, I think cricket nowadays you've got to be so flexible with the skill-set that you have,' he concluded.
