South Africa climbed to the top of the World Test Championship (WTC) table with a convincing 109-run win over Sri Lanka in the second Test at St George's Park, wrapping up the series 2-0. The hosts bowled Sri Lanka out for 238 on the final morning, with Keshav Maharaj delivering a stellar performance.

Maharaj, who claimed his 11th Test five-wicket haul and fourth at this venue, dismantled Sri Lanka's lower order, taking four of the last five wickets. Sri Lanka, who started the day at 205 for 5 with two well-set batters, crumbled in just 62 balls, losing their last five wickets for 19 runs.

The day began with Kusal Mendis and Dhananjaya de Silva aiming to build on their 83-run partnership from the previous day. However, South Africa's bowlers returned refreshed and determined. Kagiso Rabada, bowling with precision and movement, kept the pressure on.

Maharaj broke the key stand in the seventh over of the morning when Kusal, attempting a drive, edged the ball to Aiden Markram, who took a low catch confirmed by the third umpire. Soon after, Rabada removed Dhananjaya, who edged a ball moving away and was caught behind.

With the recognised batters gone, South Africa swiftly dealt with Sri Lanka's tail. Prabath Jayasuriya mistimed a shot off a short ball from Maharaj and was caught by Temba Bavuma. After drinks, Vishwa Fernando swung across the line and sent a catch to Marco Jansen at mid-on. Jansen then took the final wicket, dismissing Lahiru Kumara with a short ball that was top-edged to Ryan Rickelton at short mid-wicket.

South Africa's strong performance not only secured the series but also brought them closer to a guaranteed spot in next year's WTC final. They need one more win in their upcoming home series against Pakistan to confirm their place.

Sri Lanka, now relying on other results, must beat Australia at home early next year to keep their hopes alive.

South Africa's captain, Temba Bavuma, and opener Aiden Markram were among the standout performers in this match, while Maharaj’s remarkable bowling ensured a dominant finish for the hosts.
South Africa is now set to face Pakistan on 26 December in Centurion.
