According to sources, Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) plans to rest several senior players and appoint a new captain for the T20I series
Pakistan is expected to make significant changes to their squad for the upcoming five-match T20I series against New Zealand, scheduled to start on March 16.
According to sources, Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) plans to rest several senior players and appoint a new captain for the T20I series.
The PCB has completed its consultation process regarding the white-ball squads for the New Zealand tour, which will take place from March 16 to April 5. The squad announcement is awaited, with key changes anticipated for both the T20I and ODI formats.
One of the biggest changes expected is in the leadership of the T20I squad. With the PCB aiming to give young players and domestic performers a chance, senior players such as captain Mohammad Rizwan, batter Babar Azam, vice-captain Salman Ali Agha, and pacer Naseem Shah are likely to be rested for the T20I series.
All-rounder Shadab Khan, who last played in a T20I during the 2024 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup against Ireland, is expected to be named captain for the series against New Zealand.
In terms of coaching staff, former pacer Aqib Javed is likely to continue as the interim head coach, as the PCB has not yet started the recruitment process due to time constraints. Former Pakistan captain Mohammad Yousuf is also expected to replace Shahid Aslam as the new batting coach. Azhar Mahmood and Muhammad Masroor are set to remain as the bowling and fielding coaches, respectively.
While the T20I squad is set for a major overhaul, the ODI squad is expected to undergo only slight changes. Mohammad Rizwan is likely to continue leading the team in the 50-over format, with a balanced mix of experience and youth in the squad.
The final squads for both formats will be announced today.
