The last time Pakistan hosted a major ICC event was the 1996 World Cup, which it co-hosted with India and Sri Lanka
Pakistan is finally hosting a major ICC tournament after nearly three decades, as the Champions Trophy kicked off on Wednesday in Karachi. In the opening match, Pakistan won the toss and decided to field against New Zealand at the National Stadium.
The last time Pakistan hosted a major ICC event was the 1996 World Cup, which it co-hosted with India and Sri Lanka. Now, the country welcomes top international teams for the prestigious eight-team tournament.
Despite the excitement surrounding Pakistan’s return as an ICC event host, the crowd turnout at the National Stadium was lower than expected. Former England captain Michael Vaughan took to social media to point this out, writing on X:
"Great to see the Champions Trophy being played in Pakistan .. First major event since 1996 .. Have they forgotten to tell the locals it’s on .. Where is the crowd??"
It is worth noting that the top two teams from each group will qualify for the semifinals. The final is set for March 9. If India reaches the final, the match will be held in Dubai. Otherwise, Lahore will host the championship decider.
