Former England cricket captain turned commentator Michael Vaughan has taken a swipe at Indian cricket stars Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, and Ravindra Jadeja for not securing more ICC trophies during their careers.
The trio, who recently announced their retirement from T20 internationals after leading India to victory in the 2024 T20 World Cup, were the focus of Vaughan's pointed remarks.
Vaughan noted that while the retirement decision comes at an opportune time, the trio should have amassed more white-ball trophies.
“They’ll all agree that it is a perfect way to go, but they should have won more white ball trophies amongst them. To think that he (Rohit) has taken another seventeen years to get another one in his hand, I think he will be the first one to admit that they should have won one or two more,” Vaughan said.
The 49-year-old acknowledged the significance of their final triumph in Barbados but highlighted the trio's potential to have achieved more.
“What a way to go out with a win in Barbados and a trophy in your hand! Now they can sit back and play Test cricket, a bit of one-day cricket, and in the IPL, like MS Dhoni, play on forever. In Indian cricket, they will be replaced as there’s plenty of talent in that team,” he said.
Kohli ended his career as the top run-scorer in T20 World Cup history, while Rohit held the record for the most runs in T20Is when he retired after a 17-year career. The 37-year-old top-order batsman is the only Indian to win two T20 World Cup titles and the first captain ever to secure 50 T20I victories.
