Mike Hesson has been named head coach of the Islamabad United for the upcoming ninth season of the Pakistan Super League (PSL).

The 49-year-old is replacing Azhar Mehmood, who was with the franchise last year.

The announcement was made by the two-time PSL champions through their social media channels.

"Mike is very strategic and analytical on his approach, has proven skills of creating new and modern ways of playing - something his NZ stint demonstrates - and is a great people-manager," United owner Ali Naqvi told ESPNcricinfo.

Hesson conveyed his enthusiasm about joining Islamabad United, expressing his delight in being part of a franchise known for its professional, modern, and mindful approach.

"I am delighted to be a part of Islamabad United. The professional, modern, and dimagh se (mindful) approach associated with the franchise resonates strongly with me. I am also impressed with United's strategy built around the principle of 4 Es - Excellence, Empowerment, Education and Environment. I look forward to working with the talented players and staff to build a successful team and deliver exciting cricket to the fans," Hesson said.

Hesson has previously served as the head coach of the New Zealand national team from 2012 to 2018. During his tenure, New Zealand achieved significant success, including reaching their first World Cup final in 2015.

The upcoming season of HBL Pakistan Super League is tentatively scheduled from 8 February to 24 March.
