Islamabad United head coach Mike Hesson has shared his insights on the challenges Gary Kirsten will face as the new head coach of the Pakistan cricket team.

In a video interview, Hesson outlined the significant obstacles Kirsten will need to overcome in his new role.

Hesson emphasized that Pakistan cricket is currently in a state of turmoil due to frequent changes in leadership and administration within the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB). He explained that these changes have created a culture where players focus on their individual performances rather than the team's success.

“Firstly, I don't think Gary would be surprised. I mean, if Gary did his research, and I know he's a well-researched man, he would work out that players, because of the chopping and changing of the chair and the leadership of the team, have to look after themselves. And that's the model that Pakistan cricket has developed. They've developed a selfish model because players can't turn up and say, Hey, we're going to buy into this team plan, this team ethos, because I could be gone tomorrow," Hesson said.

Hesson also highlighted the difficulty Kirsten will face in fostering trust and commitment within the team under such uncertain conditions. He noted that Kirsten will need significant support from the PCB to transform the team.

“You know, if someone new comes in, they'll have a different idea. Unless I score 100 today or look after myself, I could easily get sidetracked. So that just doesn't instill any form of team mentality. So, you know, I don't think Gary will be surprised. How he makes that change will be interesting, because, you know, once again, it's really hard for a player to go. Yes, Gary, we trust you, we believe you, and we'll back you if they don't know if Gary's going to be there in six months' time, eight months' time, or whatever. And based on history, that's a real threat," he further added.

Hesson acknowledged that this task will not be easy and will require strong backing from the PCB to create a stable and supportive environment for the players and coaching staff.
