Former Pakistan captain Misbah-ul-Haq has opened up about his advice being overlooked by captain Babar Azam and coach Mickey Arthur regarding the team's spin bowling strategy ahead of the World Cup.
While talking on a local sports channel, Misbah expressed his concerns, pointing out the lackluster performance of spinners Shadab Khan and Mohammad Nawaz, even dating back to the Asia Cup 2023.
‘Spin bowling was the major issue, it was out of form and you had to figure out ways to sort it. Shadab and Nawaz’s performance weren’t convincing even in Asia Cup. When you were leaving for World Cup and things were in your control, you should have kept an extra spinner,” Misbah said.
The former captain emphasized the critical role spin bowling plays, especially in subcontinent conditions, and suggested that the team management should have taken steps to strengthen this aspect of their game.
He expressed his disappointment in the decision-making process, indicating that his advice was disregarded by the team's leadership.
"Management was of this point of view that we are carrying one team for more than a year. The management included captain, coach, and team director," Misbah further added, shedding light on the perspective that the team had developed over the course of their preparations.
It is worth noting that Pakistan, having won four matches and suffered defeats in an equal number, faces a precarious situation in ICC Men’s World Cup 2023. To secure a spot in the semi-finals, Pakistan must conclude their campaign with 10 points. However, their net run-rate poses a significant challenge.
As Pakistan teeters on the edge of elimination from the World Cup 2023, the pressure is mounting on the team to secure a decisive victory against England.
