Former cricketers have weighed in on Pakistan's early exit from the T20 World Cup 2024, with former captain Misbah-ul-Haq expressing his disappointment over the team's performance.

In a recent interview with a local sports show, Misbah believes Pakistan should have secured a win in at least one of their first two games.

“This can happen to any team but the biggest disappointment is that both of the matches (against USA and India) were in the hands of Pakistan. We made mistakes in the first match and that is okay; you make mistakes in one match, but we needed to rectify those mistakes not repeat them again and again,” Misbah said.

The former skipper emphasized that winning against India was achievable, given it was a run-a-ball match. He noted that defeating India would have been a significant accomplishment for Pakistan.

“In the next match against India, we had an amazing opportunity to cover all of the mistakes we made against Canada. It was a good opportunity, that too, against one of the top teams, India. We were at a stage in the match where everything was in our hands, and winning against India would have been a massive achievement, and this team has done so (in the 2021 T20 World Cup),” he said.

He also pointed out that while mistakes are part of the game, consistently repeating them and attributing losses to other factors is unproductive.

“We played so disappointing cricket which was not expected from us. It is a normal thing to make mistakes, and it is a part of the game not to make those mistakes again and again where you had the opportunity of run-a-ball and you had wickets in hand but you still lost, then there is no point in saying that this and that happened or it rained,” he said.

“We made difficulties for ourselves by losing those first two matches. We should have won at least one of them at any cost,” he concluded.
