Ever since Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) signed Mitchell Starc for INR 24.75 crore, he was the center of all discussions. His initial performance in the tournament was underwhelming, increasing the pressure on him, but Starc wasn't bothered by the criticism. Similarly, Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) signed Pat Cummins for INR 20.50 crore, drawing criticism for earning more than top Indian players.

Starc recently spoke about the criticism surrounding their salaries and how they found humor in the situation as both players led their teams to the final. Starc played a crucial role in guiding KKR to success in Qualifier 1 and the final, while Cummins led SRH to the summit clash for the first time in six years. Reflecting on this, Starc joked about how they went from being considered overpriced to playing in the final.

“Did laugh. So first game of the IPL, we played Hyderabad. So Paddy and I both got paid a fair bit, played first game, had a bit of a laugh about it. Just so happens we play each other nine weeks later in the final. And all of a sudden it's gone from, oh, they've paid overs for these two. These two are now playing a final. Funny that,” Starc said on Willow Talk Cricket Podcast.

KKR defeated SRH by eight wickets in the final. The game ended earlier than expected, delaying the post-match presentation. Starc mentioned that the delay killed the vibe and shared a humorous moment involving his teammate Angkrish Raghuvanshi.

“So game finished at 10pm presentation hasn't even started by midnight. So we're like, killed the vibe already sitting down and young young Anki who's our number three, he's like they see the winner's cheques come over team get 20 crore for winning the final he goes it's not even what you got paid,” Starc concluded.
