Former Pakistan fast bowler Mohammad Amir has spoken about how former captain Younis Khan dealt with team politics during his time as skipper.

Recalling Pakistan’s ODI series loss to New Zealand in 2009, Amir shared that Younis called him and two other young players for a private talk.

“He said ‘I know everything that has been happening with the team. I don’t need to tell you that but you are kids and you have to serve Pakistan cricket and stay away from these things,’” Amir recalled.

The left-arm pacer also praised Younis’ leadership, saying that the senior batter took full responsibility for handling team matters.

“He went, ‘Whatever is going on, I will handle it. I am the leader and I will manage this.’ This is the role of a leader,” Amir said.

Younis Khan, who retired from international cricket in 2017, is regarded as one of Pakistan’s greatest batsmen.

He ended his Test career with an average of over 50 and remains the only Pakistani to score more than 10,000 Test runs. He also has the unique record of scoring a triple-century and a double-century against India on their home ground.

Younis led Pakistan to their first and only T20 World Cup title in 2009. He retired from T20Is after that victory and later stepped away from ODIs in November 2015.
