He further explained that if the selectors wanted a new captain for all formats, Haris should have been given the role
Former Pakistan fast bowler Mohammad Amir has expressed his disagreement with the decision to make Salman Ali Agha the new T20I captain. He believes Mohammad Haris would have been a better choice for the leadership role.
In a recent interview, Amir acknowledged Agha Salman's contributions in ODIs and Test cricket but said that Haris has been groomed for captaincy.
“Haris is captaining everywhere. He led the Pakistan Shaheens, and he also captained in the Champions Cup,” Amir said.
He further explained that if the selectors wanted a new captain for all formats, Haris should have been given the role.
"Agha Salman is a very good cricketer, but if you wanted to bring in a new captain for ODIs and Tests, you should have chosen Mohammad Haris because he has been groomed everywhere as a captain,” he added.
Haris, known for his aggressive batting, fits the modern T20 format well. At 23 years old, he is also eight years younger than Agha Salman, making him a long-term leadership option.
Haris has been recalled to the Pakistan squad for the upcoming T20I series against New Zealand, which will start this month. The white-ball squad for the tour was announced a few days ago.
The series will include five T20Is followed by three ODIs, scheduled from March 16 to April 5.
Haris has played nine T20I matches for Pakistan, scoring 126 runs with a strike rate of 127.27. His last T20I match for Pakistan was against New Zealand in Rawalpindi in 2023.
