Naqvi decided to delegate his cricketing powers to Waqar, retaining oversight of administrative affairs
Former Pakistan captain Younis Khan has expressed his support for the appointment of Waqar Younis to a significant role within the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB).
This development follows reports that PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi has entrusted Waqar with the authority to make crucial cricket decisions.
On Tuesday, sources revealed that Naqvi decided to delegate his cricketing powers to Waqar, retaining oversight of administrative affairs.
Waqar will now oversee international and domestic selection committees, players’ No Objection Certificates (NOCs), and other critical cricket matters. This move aligns with the PCB Constitution of 2014, which permits the chairman to delegate his authority.
Former Pakistan skipper, Younis Khan, during a media interaction on Wednesday, expressed his approval of Naqvi’s decision.
"I’ve played under Waqar Younis and I think it’s a good sign that he’s coming back to the cricket board," said Younis. "Waqar Younis has the opportunity to solve the cricketing issues."
Former Pakistan all-rounder Mohammad Hafeez also congratulated Waqar Younis on his new role.
"Congratulations dear @waqyounis99 on your new responsibility in a new role with @TheRealPCB. Best wishes as always," Hafeez posted on X.
In addition to backing Waqar's appointment, the former captain called for the resumption of bilateral cricketing ties between Pakistan and India.
"Pakistan-India cricket should go ahead. I wish someone like Pervez Musharraf would come and restore Pak-India cricket," he said.
He also expressed his hope for India to visit Pakistan for the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, highlighting the respectful treatment the Pakistan team received during their tours to India.
"I wish to see Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli playing in Pakistan [in Champions Trophy 2025]. Whenever we toured India, we were treated with utmost respect," he concluded.
