Dhoni, who stepped down as CSK captain ahead of the 2024 season, handed over the leadership to Ruturaj Gaikwad
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is contemplating reintroducing a rule that could impact player retention in the Indian Premier League (IPL). This rule, which was in place since the inaugural season in 2008 but was scrapped in 2021, would categorize players who have been retired from international cricket for at least five years as "uncapped" for retention purposes.
The proposal to bring back the rule gained attention during a recent meeting between IPL team owners and BCCI officials. Although there was limited support from other franchises, Chennai Super Kings (CSK) management strongly advocated for its reintroduction. The rule would allow CSK to potentially retain their legendary former captain, MS Dhoni, as an uncapped player, enabling them to keep most of their core team.
A source close to the discussions mentioned, "There is a bright possibility of the rule coming back. It was discussed at length during the meeting last month and could well be brought back when the player regulations are announced."
If reinstated, this rule would mean that retaining an uncapped player like Dhoni would only cost a franchise INR 4 crore, compared to the higher retention fee for capped players. This would make it financially easier for CSK to keep Dhoni on their roster. During the 2022 mega auctions, CSK retained Dhoni for INR 12 crore.
Dhoni, who stepped down as CSK captain ahead of the 2024 season, handed over the leadership to Ruturaj Gaikwad. Despite finishing fifth in the points table and missing out on the playoffs, Dhoni made significant contributions with the bat, scoring 161 runs from just 73 balls at a striking rate of 220.55.
Dhoni remains one of the most revered figures in Indian cricket, and his fans are hopeful that he will continue to grace the IPL with his presence in the 2025 season.
