Former cricketer Gautam Gambhir is poised to take on the role of India's Head Coach as the team gears up for their tour of Sri Lanka, starting on July 28.
According to media reports, Gambhir has received approval from the BCCI for his appointment and his requested coaching staff.
Abhishek Nayar is likely to join as the batting coach, while Jonty Rhodes, currently the fielding coach for Lucknow Super Giants, has been approached to serve as the bowling coach.
Nayar, though not known for his international runs, has been a vital mentor for players like Rohit Sharma, Dinesh Karthik, and Shubman Gill.
He boasts an impressive domestic career, contributing significantly to Mumbai's Ranji Trophy successes. His notable performances include a crucial 97 against Gujarat and a 152 against Karachi Urban in the Mohammad Nissar Trophy.
In the 2008-09 Ranji Trophy final, his vital 99 helped secure Mumbai's 38th title. Nayar also played for Mumbai Indians in the early seasons of the Indian Premier League.
Recently, both Nayar and Gambhir were part of the support staff for Kolkata Knight Riders.
It is worth noting that Sri Lanka will host the 2024 T20 World Cup champions India for a limited-overs home series from July to August, comprising three T20Is and three ODIs.
