The former England cricketer named interim head coach will re-join the team in Southampton ahead of the first T20I on September 11
Marcus Trescothick, currently serving as the assistant coach for the England cricket team, is set to step into the role of interim head coach for the upcoming three-match T20I series and five-match ODI series against Australia next month.
Trescothick will temporarily shift his focus to the white-ball format as England prepares for a highly anticipated showdown with their arch-rivals.
Currently engaged with the ongoing three-match Test series against Sri Lanka, Trescothick is expected to leave the camp during the third Test at The Oval to join the Jos Buttler-led England squad in preparation for the limited-overs fixtures.
He will rejoin the team in Southampton ahead of the first T20I on September 11.
In a recent statement, Trescothick hinted that his performance during the Australia series could influence his future within the coaching structure. However, he emphasized his immediate focus on the tasks at hand.
“It's not something I'd ever thought about before until I got this opportunity now. I'm not necessarily thinking any further ahead than the end of the Australia series. I've been very much focused on the job we're doing here with the Test team,” Trescothick said.
He also acknowledged the upcoming tours to Pakistan and New Zealand, indicating that his current focus remains on the immediate challenges rather than long-term plans.
“You plan your winter: we're off to Pakistan, then New Zealand. I'm so ingrained in that at the moment, I've not really sat down and said, 'right, this is where I'll try to go, this is what I'll try to do'. I'm looking forward to the opportunity, for sure. I'm really excited about doing the job. We'll work it out a little bit more from there,” he added.
