New Zealand has revealed their 15-member squad for the upcoming ICC Women’s T20 World Cup, with experienced all-rounder Sophie Devine leading the team. Devine, who will be making her ninth appearance in the tournament, is hopeful of lifting the trophy for the first time after finishing as runner-up in 2009 and 2010.
The tournament will kick off in October in the United Arab Emirates, and New Zealand's squad includes key players like Suzie Bates, Lea Tahuhu, Amelia Kerr, and Maddy Green. Both Devine and Bates have played in every edition of the Women’s T20 World Cup so far.
The team also sees the return of right-arm medium bowler Rosemary Mair, who missed the tour of England due to a back injury. She will strengthen the pace attack alongside Jess Kerr, Tahuhu, Hannah Rowe, and Molly Penfold.
For the spin-friendly conditions in the UAE, New Zealand has a solid spin lineup, featuring Leigh Kasperek, Amelia Kerr, and Fran Jonas.
White Ferns coach Ben Sawyer is confident in his team’s mix of experienced and younger players.
“Congratulations to all of the players named in this squad, it’s a significant achievement to be selected to represent your country at a World Cup. I’m really pleased with this squad, I think these are our best 15 players to adapt to what will likely be varied conditions," Sawyer said.
Sawyer also praised the experience that Devine and Bates bring, especially from their performances in World Cups and franchise leagues.
New Zealand will face tough competition in Group A alongside Australia, India, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka. Before the main event, they will play warm-up matches against South Africa and England.
