Mitchell Hay, dazzled with a 19-ball cameo, smashing 41 runs at a strike rate of 215, earning him the Player of the Match award
New Zealand clinched the T20I series against Sri Lanka with a commanding 45-run victory in the second match, securing an unassailable 2-0 lead. The match, played at the Bay Oval in Mount Maunganui, showcased New Zealand's collective effort, leaving Sri Lanka still searching for their first series win in New Zealand.
Batting first, New Zealand posted a challenging total of 186 for 5, thanks to standout performances by Mark Chapman (42), Mitchell Hay (41), and Tim Robinson (41). Mitchell Hay, in particular, dazzled with a 19-ball cameo, smashing 41 runs at a strike rate of 215, earning him the Player of the Match award.
Sri Lanka, chasing 187, started promisingly but faltered in the final stages, getting bowled out for 141 in 19.1 overs. Kusal Perera top-scored with 48, while Pathum Nissanka added 37, but the lack of support from the middle and lower order proved costly.
Jacob Duffy was the star with the ball for New Zealand, delivering a match-winning spell of 4 for 15. Duffy's crucial breakthroughs at key moments, including the dismissals of Nissanka and Perera, halted Sri Lanka's momentum. Mitchell Santner’s tactical use of Duffy in short bursts paid dividends, ensuring Sri Lanka never found their footing.
New Zealand's disciplined batting approach stood out, with their batters striking above 140 and consistently rotating the strike. They also capitalized on running between the wickets, collecting 14 twos compared to Sri Lanka's five.
Sri Lanka, on the other hand, struggled with acceleration and running between the wickets. Despite being well-placed at 72 for 2 at the halfway mark, they managed just 69 runs in the final 10 overs, collapsing under New Zealand's pressure.
The final T20I of the series will be played on Thursday, 2nd January, at Saxton Oval in Nelson.
