Cricket Australia (CA) chief executive Nick Hockley has confirmed his resignation after five years in the role, effective March next year at the conclusion of the current cricket season. Hockley's departure comes amid discussions with CA chair Mike Baird and other directors, who indicated they did not view him as a long-term option for the position.

According to a report from the Sydney Morning Herald, Hockley was given the opportunity to leave on amicable terms after the board's decision regarding his future.

“Hockley advised CA’s board of his intended departure after chair Mike Baird and fellow directors had decided that they did not see him as a long-term CEO, but wanted to give him the chance to exit on his own terms,” SMH reported.

Reflecting on his decision, Hockley acknowledged the difficulty of the choice but emphasized the timing. “This was a difficult decision,” he said.

“However, following what promises to be a blockbuster summer and with our five-year strategic plan well progressed, this is the right time to pursue another challenge, while giving the board plenty of time to find its next CEO to build on the strong foundations now in place,” he added.

As Cricket Australia prepares for an exciting summer ahead, with India set to visit for a highly anticipated five-Test series, Hockley stressed that his focus remains on the current season. “This is not the time for goodbyes, as I remain completely focused on the season ahead and supporting the board on succession and a smooth transition,” he noted.

In the wake of Hockley's resignation, discussions about potential successors have begun. Leading the list of contenders is James Allsopp, CA’s Head of Cricket. Other names being considered include former CA Head of Broadcast and Commercial Stephanie Beltrame, former women’s captain Belinda Clark, and Australian Cricketers’ Association CEO Todd Greenberg.
