Nigeria pulled off a historic upset, edging past New Zealand by two runs in the 2025 ICC Women's U19 T20 World Cup
Nigeria pulled off a historic upset on Monday, defeating New Zealand by two runs in a nail-biting contest at the Borneo Cricket Ground in Kuching, Malaysia, during the 2025 ICC Women's U19 T20 World Cup.
This remarkable win continues Nigeria’s groundbreaking journey as the first team from the country, across all genders and age groups, to qualify for an ICC event.
After their opening match against Samoa was washed out, this game marked Nigeria's first completed fixture in the tournament. The rain-affected match was reduced to 13 overs per side, with New Zealand opting to bowl first after winning the toss—a decision that ultimately backfired.
Nigeria managed a modest total of 65 runs, led by captain Lucky Piety, who top-scored with 19 runs. Liilian Udeh supported her skipper with 18 runs off 22 balls, while the rest of the batting lineup struggled against New Zealand's bowling attack.
In response, New Zealand’s chase came down to the final ball. The Kiwis required nine runs in the last over, but Nigerian skipper Piety delivered a composed performance, conceding just four runs off the first five balls. With five runs needed off the final delivery, a quick two was followed by Tash Wakelin's run-out, sealing Nigeria’s dramatic two-run victory.
Piety, though wicketless in her two overs, conceded just 13 runs and played a crucial role in the tense final over. Usen Peace, Adeshola Adekunle, and Liilian Udeh each claimed a wicket to keep New Zealand under pressure.
The defeat marks New Zealand’s second consecutive loss in the tournament, following their opening game loss to South Africa by 22 runs. To keep their hopes alive for the Super Six stage, New Zealand must now secure a comprehensive victory against Samoa in their final group match on January 22.
Nigeria, with their spirits high after this monumental win, will aim to book a spot in the Super Six with a victory over South Africa in their last group-stage game.
